What our listings show
The IGC Course Finder records an IELTS range for bachelor courses at each of 24 Australian universities. The low end of the range is the easiest course. The high end is the most demanding one. This is general information from university listings, not a visa rule.
Entry rules change, and each course sets its own requirement. Confirm your score on the official course page.
The low end: where most ranges start
For 20 of the 24 universities, the lowest IELTS score listed for a bachelor course is 6.0 overall. For the other four, the lowest is 6.5.
A score of 6.0 on the low end does not mean every course at that university accepts 6.0. It means at least one course in our listings does.
The high end: some courses ask for more
The top of the range is more varied. In our listings the highest bachelor score is 7.0 at 11 universities and 7.5 at 7 universities. Two universities list 8.0, one lists 8.5, and a few list 6.0 or 6.5 as the top.
Health, medicine, law, education and some other fields often ask for higher scores and for minimum scores in each band, such as Writing or Speaking. Read the band requirements, not only the overall score.
Overall score and band scores
IELTS gives an overall score and four band scores: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Many courses set a minimum in each band as well as overall. A student with a good overall score can still miss a course because one band is too low.
Plan your preparation around your weakest band. If Writing is your weakest, give it extra time well before your test date.
What if your score is a little low
Ask the university about English pathway or foundation courses. Some universities offer them for students who are close to the entry score. Rules and costs differ, so ask for the details in writing.
Also ask which other English tests the university accepts. Do not assume a score from one test converts to another. Read the table the university publishes.
What IGC counsellors check with you
IGC counsellors read the exact course page with you, list the overall and band scores, and tell you if your current score fits. We cannot promise admission or a visa. Universities and the government make those decisions.
Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for an Australian bachelor degree?
It depends on the course. In our listings, the range runs from 6.0 to 8.5 overall. Most universities have at least one course starting at 6.0, but some courses ask for more.
Is IELTS Academic or General Training required?
University entry normally asks for the test version named on the course page. Read the page for your course and book that version. If it is not stated, ask the university before you book.
Do I need a minimum score in each band?
Many courses set band minimums in addition to the overall score. Read the course page for the exact figures and plan your preparation around your weakest band.
Can I apply before I have my IELTS result?
Some universities may consider an application and issue a conditional offer. This differs by university and course, so ask in writing and read the conditions.
