Australia Bachelor Intakes: Which Months Are Most Common
- In our listings 20 of 24 universities show a July start for bachelor courses.
- February and March follow, and January is common too.
- Not every course starts every month. Check the exact course page.
What an intake is
An intake is a start date for a course. Many Australian universities run more than one intake a year. If you miss one, you wait for the next, so knowing the months helps you plan English tests, documents and money.
The figures below come from the IGC Course Finder. It lists 2,190 bachelor programmes at 24 universities. Start months can change by year, so confirm the intake on the official course page.
Which months appear most
Here is how many of the 24 universities in our listings show each start month for at least one bachelor course:
- July: 20 universities
- January: 16 universities
- February: 15 universities
- March: 12 universities and November: 12 universities
- May and August: 9 universities each
- October: 8 universities
- April, June and September: 7 universities each
- December: 3 universities
Courses, not just universities
Counting courses shows the same pattern more clearly. Of the 2,190 bachelor programmes, about 1,256 list a July start and about 1,132 list a February start. About 882 list a March start and about 463 list an August start. Fewer courses list January, June, September or November.
A course can list more than one start month, so these counts add up to more than 2,190. They are not a promise that a seat is open. Places and entry rules can change.
Working backwards from your start date
Pick the intake first, then count backwards. You need time for each step, and some steps depend on others. Do not buy tickets before your visa is granted.
- English test: book early and leave time for a retake if you need one
- Documents: certificates, transcripts, passport and financial papers
- Application and offer: universities set their own deadlines
- Acceptance, deposit and confirmation of enrolment
- Health cover, visa application and any health checks
- Housing and travel after the visa decision
A note on timing for HSC students
If you are waiting for HSC results or an English score, ask the university whether it makes a conditional offer. Rules differ by university and by course, so ask for the answer in writing and read the conditions carefully.
What IGC counsellors check with you
IGC counsellors help you pick an intake that fits your results and your English test dates, then list the documents each university asks for. We cannot promise an offer or a visa. Admission and visa decisions belong to universities and the government.
