How to Shortlist Bachelor Courses With the IGC Course Finder
- Start with your budget and field, then narrow by IELTS, intake and duration.
- Aim for a shortlist of three to five courses, not one.
- Confirm every detail on the official university page before you apply.
Why you need a method
The IGC Course Finder lists thousands of programmes across 13 countries. That is helpful, but it can also feel like too much. A method keeps you calm and makes your choice easier to explain to your family and to your counsellor.
The steps below work for bachelor courses. The same logic applies to other levels.
Step 1: Set your yearly budget
Decide how much your family can pay each year for tuition and living costs together. Be honest. A course you cannot afford is not a real option, however good it looks.
Remember that tuition is only part of the cost. Add health cover, rent, food, transport and visa costs. Confirm each figure on an official page.
Step 2: Choose your field
Pick the subject you want to study, for example business, computing, health or engineering. Write down one or two backup fields in case your first choice is too costly or needs a higher English score.
Do not choose a course only because the fee is low or because a friend chose it. Think about the work you want to do after you finish.
Step 3: Check English and results
Look at the IELTS score and any band minimums on the course page. Compare them with your current score or your realistic score in the next test. Also check whether the course needs particular HSC subjects or marks.
If you are a little short, ask about pathway or foundation options. Do not guess. Ask the university in writing.
Step 4: Check the intake and the duration
Choose an intake that fits your test dates and your document timeline. Then compare how long each course takes. A shorter course can reduce total cost, but only if it leads to the qualification you actually need.
Step 5: Compare campus and city
Look at where the course is taught. Cities differ in rent, travel costs and job markets. Some courses are taught at more than one campus, so confirm which campus you will attend.
Ask whether regional campuses offer any extra support or scholarships. Do not assume. Check the official page.
Step 6: Shortlist three to five and verify
Pick three to five courses and write the fee, IELTS score, intake, duration and campus for each in one table. Open the official page for each one and check that nothing has changed.
Then book a counselling session and go through your table together. A good counsellor will explain the risks as well as the benefits, and will not promise an offer, a visa or a scholarship.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Course Finder information official?
It is built from university listings checked in October 2026. Fees, entry rules and intakes change, so always confirm them on the official course page before you apply.
How many courses should I shortlist?
Three to five is a good number. It gives you backups if an offer does not come or a fee changes, without making the decision too hard.
Can I use the Course Finder before I have an IELTS score?
Yes. You can explore courses and see the English scores they ask for. Your counsellor can then help you plan your test dates.
Does the Course Finder guarantee admission?
No. It helps you compare options. Admission is decided by the university, and visas are decided by the government.
