Show Funds for a Canada Study Permit from Bangladesh

Key points
  • IRCC asks for 6 months of bank statements, and officers look at the source of the money.
  • Explain every large deposit with papers. Do not move money in just before you apply.
  • A sponsor letter needs the sponsor's job, relationship to you, amount, and ID or business registration.
  • Follow the checklist you receive in Bangladesh, because local visa office requirements can differ.

What IRCC wants the proof to show

IRCC wants to see two things. First, that you have enough money for your first year. Second, where that money came from. Its page says officers look at the amount of funds you have and their source. Your papers must tell one clear story.

This post is about evidence, not the amount. For the amount, read our post on how much money to show. IRCC also says to check the visa office instructions for your country or region for local requirements. Follow the checklist you receive when you apply in Bangladesh, even if a blog says something different. A good file is simple: the account holder, the sponsor and the story in your study plan should all match.

Proof that IRCC names

IRCC names these kinds of proof. You do not need all of them. You need enough, consistent papers to cover your total.

  • Bank statements for the past 6 months, from a Canadian or foreign account
  • Proof of paid first-year tuition and housing fees, such as a school receipt
  • A GIC from a Canadian financial institution
  • A student or education loan from a bank
  • Pay stubs, proof of rental property income, or pension documents
  • Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you moved money to Canada

Bank statements and balance history

IRCC asks for statements for the past 6 months, including the month you apply or the month before. They must show the source of the income, for example salary or savings transfers. Supporting papers may be needed. An older blog may say 4 months. IRCC's page says 6.

Use the same account for the full period where you can. Ask the bank for statements showing every transaction, not only the closing balance. If a large amount came in during those months, prepare a short note and papers that explain it, such as a salary record, business record, gift deed or sale deed.

Money that appears just before you apply, with no paper trail, makes an officer ask where it came from. Officers can see when each amount arrived.

Check every page for the account holder's name, the account number and the bank name. The spelling of names should match your passport and your sponsor's papers.

Sponsor letter and source of funds note

If a parent or relative pays, IRCC asks for a letter from that person. It should state their job or occupation, their relationship to you, their number of dependants, if any, and the amount of support. Attach a copy of their photo ID or proof of business registration.

Add their own evidence: six months of statements and papers that show where their money comes from, such as pay slips, a trade licence, a TIN certificate or a tax return. IRCC's page does not name TIN or tax returns, but they help explain income when the sponsor has them.

Then write a short source of funds note in plain English. Say who earns what, how the savings were built, and how any large deposit happened. Match every sentence to a document. Papers not in English or French need a translation with the translator's affidavit, and IRCC says you or your family must not do it yourself.

For Quebec, quebec.ca asks for six months of account statements, four months of pay stubs, and a signed Declaration of financial support form if someone else pays.

Loans, FDR, property and solvency certificates

Some Bangladeshi documents are common but are not named on IRCC's page. Use them to support your statements, not to replace them. Whatever you choose, the officer's question is the same: is this money really yours or your sponsor's, and can it be used for study?

  • Education loan: IRCC accepts a student or education loan from a bank. Bring the sanction letter showing amount and period.
  • FDR: not named by IRCC. Show the bank certificate and the statement that shows how it was funded.
  • Property: IRCC names rental property income, not the property itself. If you sell, show the deed and the money arriving.
  • Bank solvency certificate: not named by IRCC. Add it only if your checklist asks, never instead of statements.
  • Currency rules: IRCC says that if a country uses exchange controls, you must show you are allowed to send the funds out. Ask your bank which papers it gives for this.

Red flags that raise questions

These are not IRCC rules. They are points that may lead an officer to ask questions or ask for more documents. If you see one of these in your own file, add an explanation and papers before you submit, not after a request.

  • Large deposits shortly before applying, with no explanation
  • Funds in another person's account, with no sponsor letter or proof of relationship
  • A sponsor's income that does not fit the amount, or a sponsor with no income papers
  • A letter that says one figure while the statements show another
  • Unclear, cut or edited pages

Common mistakes, and what IGC counsellors check

The usual mistakes are sending only a solvency certificate, sending Bangla papers with no translation, using old rules from a blog, and mixing names or relationships across documents. Never use fake or edited papers. They can harm every future application.

IGC counsellors go through your statements with you, line by line. We look for large deposits, check that the sponsor letter matches the evidence, and help you write the source of funds note. Only IRCC decides the permit.

Final check before you submit: six months of statements, a tuition receipt if you have paid, the sponsor letter with ID, the source of funds note, translations, and the checklist from your visa application centre.

Frequently asked questions

How many months of bank statements should I show?

IRCC's page asks for statements for the past 6 months, including the month you apply or the month before. They must show the source of income. Your Bangladesh checklist may add local requirements, so follow it too.

Do I need a bank solvency certificate?

IRCC's page does not name it. Some applicants include one to support their statements. Add it if your checklist asks. It does not replace statements that show history and source of funds.

Can my parents sponsor my study in Canada?

Yes, IRCC accepts a letter from the person giving you money. It must state their occupation, relationship, dependants and the amount, with a photo ID copy or business registration. Add their own statements and income papers.

What if there is a big deposit in my account?

Do not hide it. Prepare a clear explanation and documents, such as a sale deed, gift deed, loan paper or business record. IRCC officers look at where funds came from, so an explained deposit is safer than a mystery.
